Our Art in Action
Tattoo Care
Tattoo aftercare immediately after the tattoo appointment
- Wear loose clothing that won’t rub against the tattooed area.
- Do not consume alcohol or other drugs – your body has enough work to do right now with the tattoo.
- Drink and eat enough – you want to keep your circulation going.
- If you’re feeling unwell, give yourself some rest and get a good night’s sleep.
General aftercare: Cleaning and tattoo care
- Never touch your tattoo with unwashed hands: there is a risk of infection.
- For cleansing, it is best to use a pH-neutral washing lotion.
- Avoid products containing fragrances or perfumes: they could irritate your skin.
- Don’t dry your tattoo with a towel after cleaning: use kitchen roll instead – it doesn’t leave lint and is less rough.
- When drying, you should pat rather than rub.
- Here you’ll find a detailed article on the different healing methods: After tattooing: Suprasorb, Dry-Loc pads or cling film?
- Once the tattoo is completely dry and feels tight, a thin layer of panthenol ointment should be applied.
The first few days after getting a tattoo
- Protect the freshly tattooed area and avoid putting too much strain on the affected body part.
- Wear loose clothing to avoid friction on the tattoo.
- Dust and dirt should not get on the tattoo.
- If you have pets, they and their hair should be kept away from your tattoo as much as possible.
- Don’t pick at your tattoo! Skin flakes and scabs should fall off on their own – otherwise you risk scarring and color loss.
- Don’t scratch! If the tattoo itches, gently tap it with the flat of your hand.
- Keep a close eye on your tattoo: slight redness, swelling, burning, and pain are usually normal in the first few days. However, if the wound remains very red, painful, or oozing despite resting for several days, you may need to seek medical advice. It’s always a good idea to ask your tattoo artist for their opinion beforehand.
The first two to four weeks after getting a tattoo
- No exercise! Both sweat and the strain on the skin from excessive movement are not conducive to wound healing.
- No saunas or steam baths
- Don’t take a full bath – a short shower is better.
- Don’t go swimming – whether it’s the sea, a lake, or an outdoor pool.
- Here you’ll find a detailed article on the topic: Bathing, swimming, showering – When can water touch a new tattoo?
- As long as your tattoo is still healing and your skin is flaky, peeling, or very dry, you should not shave, exfoliate, or do anything similar to the area.
Tattoo aftercare for the rest of your life 🙂
- Avoid strong sun or tanning beds: premature skin aging also makes tattoos look old.
- Sun protection: Cover tattoos with clothing and use sunscreen (it definitely doesn’t have to be “specifically for tattoos”).
- Laser treatments (e.g., IPL hair removal) can damage tattoos.
- Take good care of your entire skin, and your tattoos will look better too.
